Welcome to the Kwaidan region, where heroes and villains are born and broken. Trainers don’t just stand on the sidelines barking orders; they thrust themselves into the line of fire and taste the real grit of fighting. In this superstitious world full of bizarre creatures, impossible horrors and unbreakable courage, humans and Pokémon struggle to find, or create, themselves.

Caterwaul is a written based Pokémon forum that doesn’t hold much value in stats or levels. To excel in battle you must use creativity, flexibility and logic. But, above all else, you must tear yourself away from video game mode and consider your characters more than just pixel sprites on a gameboy screen. No faceclaims, no word count. You’re also welcomed to make a preset team.

Questions and Answers

1) What kind of character can I create?

You make create a trainer character (either a newbie who receives a starter or an experienced one with a preset team), a non-trainer (such as a breeder or researcher), a Team Rocket member, or a pokemon.

2) You mean I can play as a pokemon?

Yes, you may rp a wild pokemon character. It cannot speak human languages, however.

3) Can my character be the champion of another region?

No, you are to assume champions remain in their own region. So the only one you'll see is the Kwadian champ.

4) How many pokemon can my character have in their party?

6. If you catch a 7th, it will be immediately transported back to the professor's for storage.

5) All my pokemon are level 100 and totally awesome and you don't have a chance at beating me. Can I be the champion?

If you think like this, you might want to look for another pokemon forum. Caterwaul is based around character interactions and development. The battles here use logic and creativity over stats. Levels are honestly not worth much here.

6) Someone is harassing me, what do I do?

Those bastards! Either work it out through pms or contact a mod. Please, don’t confuse criticism with harassment.

7) What style of clothing is the norm in this universe?

Modern.

8) What technologies are available in Kwaidan?

Caterwaul is a mixture of Pokemon the anime and Pokemon Special manga, so the time period is quasi-modern. You will see trains, boats, cars, planes and so forth. Trainers are discouraged from taking the easy way, though. You won't find wild pokemon in an airplane.

9) What's this about trainers participating in battles?

In the Kwaidan region, trainers are expected to be physically active during pokemon battles. An opponent's pokemon may target your character directly. Injuries, to trainers, are extremely common and generally accepted.

Trainers will never go fist to fist with each other in a formal battle, however.

10) Is the whole world of pokemon like that for Caterwaul? Or only in Kwaidan?

Only in Kwaidan. Trainers from outside regions, like Kanto, will probably find the fighting ethics of Kwaidian trainers shocking.

11) So the battles are sort of like pokemon special?

That's the direct inspiration.

12) Are there any legendary pokemon?

Yes, but you cannot capture them as you would a normal pokemon. Your character can try, but it won't obey and some natural disturbances will occur.

13) Can I rp a legendary pokemon?

Legendaries appear during forum events, and the forum will be given the opportunity to try out for them. 'Ownership' over them is rotational; it ends when event ends. You may also get the opportunity to rp a legendary by winning a contest.

14) Can my human talk to pokemon?

Trainers cannot understand their pokemon's speech, but they can understand the meaning. Pokemon are intelligent; if they need to get something across, they will do so.

Some psychic pokemon may communicate telepathically (via sounds and pictures) with their trainers, however. The only one who can form words through telepathy is Mewtwo.

15) Can I make up my own pokemon? Maybe a hybrid of two species?

No, sorry.

16) Do I have to challenge the gyms...? I sort of just want to play around and not take that part seriously...

It's completely up to you whether or not you take the gym challenge. I assume most will though.

17) Where is the pokemon league?! I can't find it.

It's a sub-board in Clover, the first rp board.

18) How many threads can a character be in at once?

Your character is allowed to be in as many threads at once as you can handle. We operate under liquid time.
